For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then I smiled.

“You’re right.”

Brett blinked.

“What?”

“We should divide everything fairly.”

His face brightened.

Tessa smiled.

Even Brett’s attorney relaxed.

I continued.

“Actually, I insist on it.”

Brett leaned back triumphantly.

“Finally. I knew you’d be reasonable.”

I placed my leather case on the table.

“But before we discuss my inheritance, we need to finish dividing the assets from our marriage.”

Then I opened the case.

The Folder That Changed the Meeting

I removed a thick binder.

It contained months of bank statements, credit-card records, transfers, receipts, photographs, and transaction summaries.

I placed it on the table.

Brett’s smile disappeared.

“What’s that?”

I opened the first section.

“Our marriage, translated into numbers.”

Nina almost smiled.

I turned to the first transaction.

“February fourteenth. Luxury resort stay. Five nights. Fourteen thousand five hundred dollars.”

Brett shifted in his chair.

“Business retreat.”

I slid a photograph across the table.

It showed Tessa at the same resort on the same weekend.

She stopped smiling.

“Interesting business meeting,” I said.

I turned another page.

“Three thousand two hundred dollars in restaurant charges during the same trip.”

Then another.

“March. Twelve thousand dollars at a luxury boutique in Beverly Hills.”

I looked at Tessa’s handbag.

She instinctively pulled it closer.

I continued.

“April. Six thousand dollars for jewelry.”

My eyes moved to her wrist.

Tessa slowly covered the bracelet with her sleeve.

Brett interrupted.

“Those were my expenses.”

I nodded.

“That’s exactly the problem.”

I turned to the summary page.

For months, Brett had moved money through his consulting company and labeled personal purchases as business-related costs.

Some of that money had originated from accounts connected to our marital assets.

I had followed every transaction.

Every transfer.

Every charge.

Every receipt I could legally document.

The total was just over $200,000.

I rotated the summary toward him.

“You wanted everything from our marriage divided equally.”

Brett said nothing.

“So let’s divide this too.”

The $100,000 Question

I pointed to the final calculation.

“More than two hundred thousand dollars from marital resources went toward expenses that had nothing to do with our household.”

Brett’s attorney began reading the documents carefully.

His expression changed.

I continued calmly.

“Half of that money represented my share of our marital assets.”

Brett finally spoke.

“You’re seriously asking me to pay you back?”

“You asked for equality.”

I leaned back.

“I’m agreeing with you.”

The room became silent.

Then I said the sentence I had been waiting weeks to say.

“Before you ask me for ten million dollars, let’s discuss the more than one hundred thousand dollars you may owe me.”

Tessa turned toward Brett.

“You told me those trips came from company money.”

Brett looked irritated.

“They did.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“Then perhaps you should explain how you categorized those expenses.”

That question changed everything.

Brett suddenly realized what he had admitted.

If the expenses were personal, he had a problem in our divorce accounting.

If he had classified them as legitimate business expenses, there could be other questions about his records.

His attorney closed the folder he had brought with him.

“Brett,” he said quietly, “we need to speak privately.”

But Tessa wasn’t interested in waiting.

His Girlfriend Finally Understood

She stared at Brett.

“Were you actually paying for everything with money you two shared?”

“Tessa, don’t start.”

“You told me your company was doing incredibly well.”

Brett lowered his voice.

“We’ll talk about this later.”

She pointed toward my binder.
