Yet she lived in an expensive condo near Washington Park, drove a new luxury SUV and sent Noah to a private preschool.

The numbers didn’t make sense.

So I requested a financial review.

Declan’s company was preparing for another investment round, which meant unusual payments could legitimately be examined.

Two days later, the first report arrived.

Three consulting vendors had received unusually large payments.

Two had almost no meaningful business operations.

Money from those accounts had eventually been used for Kelsey’s condo, vehicle and living expenses.

There were also regular payments connected to Declan’s parents.

I sat in my office reading the report twice.

His parents hadn’t merely known about Kelsey.

They had benefited from the same financial arrangement that helped maintain Declan’s second life.

“I Trust You”

Declan needed additional treatment after the accident and couldn’t return to work immediately.

The board asked me to temporarily supervise legal and financial approvals because I already understood the company’s investor agreements.

Declan agreed.

From his hospital bed, he actually squeezed my hand.

“I trust you more than anyone.”

I almost laughed.

Instead, I said:

“Get some rest. I’ll take care of everything.”

And I did.

Just not in the way he expected.

The deeper review uncovered nearly $1.4 million in questionable transfers over several years.

Then I found the document that hurt more than the affair.

A draft separation agreement.

Declan intended to move several valuable assets before filing for divorce. After that, his attorney planned to characterize certain business obligations as liabilities connected to both of us.

He wanted my signature before I knew what was happening.

For seven years, I had helped him build the company.

Now he was preparing to leave me with part of the burden while protecting a life he’d created behind my back.

Dinner at Our House

After Declan returned home, I invited everyone to dinner.

His parents came.

So did Kelsey and Noah.

I didn’t object to the boy being there.

Whatever his father had done, Noah was innocent.

He deserved adults who understood that.

For nearly an hour, we ate as if we were an ordinary family.

Then Marjorie said something about how difficult moments reminded people to stay loyal to family.

I almost admired the irony.

When dinner was finished, I placed four folders on the table.

Declan stared at them.

“What’s this?”

“The reason I invited everyone.”

I opened the first folder.

“The company completed a preliminary review of several vendors.”

Declan’s expression immediately changed.

I continued.

“Approximately $1.4 million moved through accounts requiring additional explanation.”

Kelsey stopped drinking.

I opened another folder.

“One trail leads to the condo where Kelsey lives.”

Then another.

“Another helped pay for her SUV.”

I looked at Marjorie and Philip.

“And several payments are connected to accounts belonging to both of you.”

Philip went pale.

Declan pushed his chair back.

“Those are private company records.”

“I’m a shareholder and legal adviser. They’re exactly the kind of records I’m required to examine.”

“I built that company!”

“Then explaining its transactions should be easy.”

Nobody moved.

The Recording

I placed my phone on the table.

Declan immediately knew.

“Don’t.”

I pressed play.

His own voice filled the dining room.

“I still need her signature on the new guarantees.”

I stopped it there.

Marjorie stared at her son.

Interestingly, she didn’t look shocked about Kelsey.

She already knew about Kelsey.

What shocked her was realizing Declan had planned to expose me financially.

Philip leaned forward.

“What guarantees?”

Declan looked at me.

“Turn that off.”

“There’s more.”

“Maren, turn it off.”

I did.

Then I slid the final folder toward him.

“My attorney will file for divorce Monday morning. We’ve also requested appropriate restrictions on disputed assets until their ownership and funding sources can be reviewed.”

Kelsey’s confidence disappeared.

“The condo is in my name.”

“Then you should have nothing to worry about if it was purchased with legitimate personal funds.”

She said nothing.

The Family Began Turning on Itself

Declan stood.

“After everything I’ve done for you?”

For the first time that night, I laughed.

“For me?”

I reminded him who had helped pay for his first warehouse.

Who had introduced him to two of his earliest investors.

Who had worked nights reviewing contracts when the company couldn’t afford another attorney.

Who had helped his parents financially because he told me they were struggling.

“I spent seven years helping you build security,” I said. “You spent those same years building an exit behind my back.”

Kelsey suddenly spoke.

“He chose me.”

Marjorie turned toward her.

“This isn’t helping.”

“Why should I stay quiet anymore?” Kelsey snapped. “He told me this would all be settled after the new investment.”

Philip looked at his son.

“What happens to us if the company freezes those payments?”

That question told me everything.

Not, “What happens to our son’s marriage?”

Not, “What happens to Noah?”

Money.
