Part 1 of 3

The Anniversary Dinner That Changed Everything

On the night of our eleventh wedding anniversary, my sister-in-law embarrassed me at my own dinner table because I served myself dinner before filling her plate.

But what ended my marriage was not what she did.

It was the necklace around her neck.

My name is Natalie Prescott. At thirty-seven, I had spent more than a decade believing that a peaceful marriage required compromise. My husband, Ryan, called it “keeping the family together.”

Looking back, I realize that almost all of that compromise had come from me.

We lived outside Madison, Wisconsin, in a four-bedroom house I had spent years renovating. I worked as an interior designer, and that house was the first place I had ever designed entirely for myself.

That Friday evening, I had prepared dinner for Ryan, our eight-year-old daughter, Hallie, our six-year-old son, Wyatt, Ryan’s mother, Patricia, and his younger sister, Vanessa.

I had spent hours making everything look beautiful.

White candles.

Fresh flowers.

Roasted chicken with herbs.

Ryan’s favorite potatoes.

Even the dessert was the same chocolate cake we had served at our wedding.

I thought we were celebrating eleven years together.

Apparently, I was the only one who believed that.

Vanessa arrived almost forty minutes late wearing an expensive cream dress and carrying no gift, not even a card.

She kissed Ryan on the cheek, barely acknowledged me, and immediately complained that dinner smelled “too heavy.”

I ignored it.

I had become very good at ignoring things.

Then, as everyone began serving themselves, I placed a small piece of chicken on my own plate.

Vanessa stared at me.

“Seriously, Natalie?”

I looked up.

“What?”

She gave a small laugh.

“You serve Mom first. Then Ryan. Then your guests. You don’t just start eating.”

I thought she was joking.

“Vanessa, this is my house. Everyone can serve themselves.”

Her expression changed instantly.

She leaned toward me and made an aggressive gesture across the table, knocking my hand away from the serving dish.

The room went silent.

My daughter froze.

Wyatt lowered his fork.

Vanessa stared directly at me.

“You really have forgotten your place in this family.”

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.

Then I looked at Ryan.

Eleven years of marriage came down to that moment.

He could have told his sister she had crossed a line.

He could have asked her to leave.

Instead, he picked up a linen napkin and handed it to Vanessa because a little wine had splashed onto her sleeve.

“Here,” he said. “Clean that before it stains.”

Then he looked at me.

“Natalie, don’t turn this into a bigger situation. Vanessa has had a difficult month.”

Something inside me became very quiet.

Not angry.

Not frightened.

Just finished.

The Sapphire Around Her Neck

Vanessa was still talking, but I barely heard her.

My attention had moved to the necklace resting against her collarbone.

It was a deep-blue sapphire surrounded by tiny diamonds, set in an antique-style white-gold frame.

I knew that necklace.

Four weeks earlier, one of my clients had invited me to an estate jewelry preview in downtown Madison. I had noticed the sapphire because the craftsmanship was unusual.

The final sale price had been approximately $6,500.

Three weeks later, exactly $6,500 disappeared from an account Ryan and I had created for Hallie and Wyatt’s future education.

I had confronted him immediately.

“Why is money missing from the kids’ account?”

Ryan had barely looked up from his laptop.

“I loaned it to someone.”

“Who?”

“A friend from college. He had an emergency.”

I remember standing in our kitchen, uncomfortable with his answer.

“That money belongs to Hallie and Wyatt.”

Ryan sighed.

“I’ll replace it after my quarterly bonus. Can you trust me for once?”

So I did.

Or perhaps I simply wanted to.

Now that “emergency loan” was sparkling around his sister’s neck.

I placed my fork beside my plate.

“Where did you get that necklace?”

Vanessa touched the sapphire instinctively.

“This?”

She smiled.

“It was a gift.”

I looked at Ryan.

His face told me everything before he said a word.

“From whom?” I asked.

Vanessa glanced toward her brother.

That was enough.

“Ryan bought it for you.”

“Natalie…” Ryan began.

I stood.

“You took $6,500 from our children’s education savings to buy your sister jewelry?”

Patricia immediately interrupted.

“Don’t discuss money at dinner.”

I almost laughed.

Of course.

The problem was not the missing money.

The problem was that I had mentioned it.

Ryan lowered his voice.

“I was going to replace it.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“He wanted to do something nice for me. Why does everything have to be about your children?”

Our children.

Her brother’s children.

That sentence finally removed the last excuse I had been making for this family.

I turned toward Hallie and Wyatt.

“Get your jackets, sweetheart.”

Ryan pushed back his chair.

“Where are you going?”

“Somewhere our children don’t have to watch their mother be treated like an inconvenience.”
