Jamie had once dreamed of becoming an astronaut.

Owen also found the stuffed fox Jamie had left behind years earlier. It had remained sealed in a storage box with the few possessions recovered from their mother’s apartment.

Owen washed it carefully and placed it on the pillow.

When Denise Palmer visited for the home inspection, she walked through every room with a clipboard.

She checked the refrigerator, the smoke detectors, the locks and Owen’s employment documents.

Then she entered Jamie’s bedroom.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

“You remembered the planets.”

Owen nodded.

“He used to draw them on everything.”

Denise touched the stuffed fox gently.

“You kept this all these years?”

“It belongs to him.”

She looked at Owen, her professional expression softening.

“Most people would have stopped fighting by now.”

“I’m not most people.”

The Hearing They Had Waited Years For

The final custody hearing was scheduled for a Thursday morning in Montgomery County Family Court.

Owen barely slept the night before.

He checked his folder repeatedly, making sure every page was in the correct order.

His work history.

His lease.

His savings records.

Letters from teachers, employers and Jamie’s current foster parents.

By seven in the morning, Owen was already dressed in the only suit he owned.

It had come from a thrift store and was slightly too large in the shoulders, but it was clean and carefully pressed.

Jamie arrived with Denise shortly before the hearing began.

He was twelve now, taller and quieter than Owen remembered him being at six.

The years had changed him.

He no longer asked when he could come home during every visit.

He had learned not to trust promises too easily.

Still, when he saw Owen, a small smile crossed his face.

“You look nervous.”

Owen smiled back.

“You look taller.”

“That’s because I am.”

Owen wanted to hug him, but the court officer asked everyone to take their seats.

Judge Lorraine Beckett entered the courtroom and reviewed the case in silence.

She studied Owen’s financial records, inspection reports and employment history.

Then she read the letters submitted by Jamie’s teachers.

One described Owen as the only consistent adult presence in Jamie’s life.

Another explained that Jamie’s grades and behavior improved after every extended visit with his brother.

The judge finally looked at Owen.

“Mr. Calloway, you were fourteen when these proceedings began.”

“Yes, Your Honor.”

“You are now asking this court to recognize you as your brother’s permanent guardian.”

“Yes.”

“Do you understand the responsibility involved?”

Owen looked across the room at Jamie.

“I’ve understood it since I was fourteen.”

The judge closed the file.

“You have demonstrated an unusual level of commitment.”

Her hand moved toward the papers prepared for her signature.

At that exact moment, the courtroom doors opened.

A woman in a cream-colored coat stepped inside.

Her hair was perfectly styled. A diamond bracelet shone at her wrist. Behind her walked a sharply dressed attorney carrying a leather briefcase.

Owen recognized her immediately.

Even after all those years, he knew the shape of her face.

Marissa Calloway had returned.

The Mother Who Wanted Only One Son

The attorney approached the front of the courtroom.

“Your Honor, I apologize for the interruption. I represent Marissa Calloway, the biological mother of James Calloway.”

Owen felt as though the room had tilted beneath him.

Jamie stared at the woman without moving.

Marissa offered him a delicate smile, as though she had missed a few birthdays instead of nearly half his childhood.

“Hello, sweetheart.”

Jamie moved closer to Denise.

Judge Beckett’s expression hardened.

“Mrs. Calloway, this court has attempted to locate you for several years.”

Marissa lowered her eyes.

“I was going through a difficult period.”

“You left two children without adult care.”

“I was not thinking clearly then. I am stable now.”

Her attorney placed several documents before the judge.

Marissa had married a wealthy property developer named Vincent Harcourt. They lived in a large home near Cincinnati. She had no employment obligations and claimed she could provide Jamie with private schooling, travel and every possible comfort.

“My client is prepared to resume her parental responsibilities immediately,” the attorney said.

Owen rose before his lawyer could stop him.

“Immediately?”

The word came out louder than he intended.

Marissa finally looked at him.

There was no warmth in her expression.

“Owen, please don’t make this harder.”

“You disappeared.”

“I had reasons.”

“He waited by the window every night.”

“I said I had reasons.”

Owen’s hands trembled.

“Then explain them.”

Marissa glanced at her attorney before answering.

“I needed a different life.”

The simplicity of the statement hurt more than any complicated excuse could have.

Owen looked toward Jamie.

His younger brother’s face had gone pale.

Marissa continued.

“Vincent and I have discussed this carefully. We believe Jamie would fit beautifully into our family.”

“What about me?” Owen asked.

Marissa sighed as though he had raised an inconvenient issue.

“You’re an adult. You have your own life.”

“I built my life around bringing him home.”

“That was your decision.”
