“Absolutely not.”
“Sit down.”
“Mom, leave her alone.”
“Interesting.”
“What?”
“Richard says he’s protecting her. You say you’re protecting her. Neither of you has asked what she wants.”
“She doesn’t need this brought back up.”
“Did she tell you that?”
Jason’s mouth closed.
I called Richard.
He answered after four rings.
“Linda.”
“Ask Emily if she’ll speak to me.”
Silence.
“I don’t think—”
“I’m not asking what you think.”
“Linda.”
“Ask her.”
His voice cooled.
“What exactly are you hoping she’ll say?”
That question settled something in me.
“The truth.”
Another pause.
“And if she says Jason destroyed everything?”
I looked at my son.
“Then Jason will hear it.”
Jason’s eyes dropped.
“And if she says you have part of it wrong?”
Richard didn’t answer.
“Then you’ll hear that too.”
Twenty minutes later, Richard called back.
Emily had agreed.
The Call That Nearly Ended Everything
Richard came to my house that evening.
Jason was already there.
The two men didn’t say hello.
I set my phone in the middle of the kitchen table.
At exactly 6:30, it rang.
I answered.
“Hi, Linda.”
Emily’s voice was steady.
Richard leaned forward.
Jason went completely still.
“Hi, Emily. Thank you for doing this.”
“Dad said there was some kind of family emergency.”
I looked at Richard.
He looked away.
“That’s dramatic,” I said.
Emily laughed softly.
“That’s Dad.”
Richard shifted.
I went straight to it.
“Emily, Jason told me the two of you were together almost three years.”
“Yes.”
“That you were saving for a house.”
“Yes.”
“And that he cheated.”
Emily didn’t hesitate.
“Yes.”
Jason looked down.
“And afterward he left you to deal with the apartment and finances mostly alone for six weeks.”
“Yes.”
Richard stared at Jason.
Then I asked the question that had been sitting between us for twenty-four hours.
“Had you already canceled the plan to buy a house before you found out about the affair?”
There was silence.
Richard spoke first.
“Emily—”
I raised my hand.
“Richard. No.”
His face tightened.
Then Emily answered.
“Yes.”
Richard froze.
Jason looked at him.
“I told you.”
Richard slapped his palm against the table.
“Don’t.”
Jason stood.
“What?”
“Don’t act like that clears you.”
“I didn’t say it did.”
“You just—”
Emily’s voice came sharply through the speaker.
“STOP.”
Both men went silent.
I’d never heard someone take control of a room from two hours away before.
Emily continued.
“This is exactly why I didn’t want to do this.”
Richard leaned toward the phone.
“Sweetheart—”
“Dad, stop.”
His mouth closed.
“Jason, sit down.”
Jason actually did.
Emily took a breath.
“Yes, I canceled the house search before I found out Jason was cheating.”
Richard shook his head slowly.
“You never told me that.”
“I did.”
“No, you said you were having doubts.”
“Dad, I was twenty-six and sobbing on your couch. I wasn’t presenting evidence.”
Richard leaned back.
Emily continued.
“Jason and I were already in trouble. We were fighting about money, marriage, where to live, whether we even wanted the same future.”
Jason nodded.
Emily heard nothing, of course.
Then she said:
“But Jason cheating was not some harmless side issue.”
Jason’s face tightened.
“I know.”
“No. Let me finish.”
He stopped.
“I was trying to decide whether our relationship could be saved, and while I was doing that, you were sleeping with someone else.”
The kitchen went quiet.
“Then when I found out, you disappeared.”
Jason stared at the table.
“Yes.”
“You ignored me because facing me made you uncomfortable.”
“Yes.”
“I handled the lease. I dealt with the bank. I packed your things. I answered questions from people who kept asking where you were.”
Jason rubbed both hands across his face.
“I’m sorry.”
“You’ve said that before.”
His hands dropped.
“I know.”
“Usually followed by an explanation.”
Jason looked at the phone.
For several seconds he said nothing.
Then:
“I cheated because I was selfish.”
Richard stared at him.
“I disappeared because I was a coward.”
Jason swallowed.
“And I left you to clean up a mess I helped create because I cared more about avoiding shame than about what I had done to you.”
Emily was quiet.
Nobody moved.
Then she said, “That’s different.”
Jason’s eyes lifted.
“Different how?”
“That’s the first apology you’ve given me without asking me to understand you.”
Richard looked down.
Jason whispered, “I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
Then Richard spoke.
“Emily, you don’t have to forgive him.”
Her voice changed immediately.
“Dad.”
“I’m just saying—”
“Dad.”
He stopped.
“Why are you still doing this?”
Richard frowned.
“Doing what?”
“Fighting with Jason for me.”
Richard stared at the phone.
“Because he hurt you.”
“Eight years ago.”
“That doesn’t make it disappear.”
“It doesn’t have to disappear.”
Emily’s voice rose for the first time.
“But it has to stop being the center of your life.”
Richard looked wounded.
“It isn’t.”
“Then why did you walk out on Linda because you saw him?”
He looked at me.
I hadn’t told Emily that detail.
Richard must have.
Emily continued.
“You met someone you care about, Dad. And the second Jason appeared, you were willing to blow that up because of something that happened to me years ago.”
“I’m protecting you.”
“From what?”
Richard opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
“Jason isn’t in my life.”
Emily’s voice softened.
“He hasn’t been for years.”
Richard looked down.
“I have a career. Friends. A home. Someone I’m seeing.”
Jason looked up at that.
Emily caught it somehow.
“Yes, Jason. Someone I’m seeing.”
Jason almost smiled.
“Good.”
“Don’t make it weird.”
He gave a small laugh.
Then Emily turned back to her father.
“Dad, your anger doesn’t protect me anymore.”
Richard’s eyes filled.
He blinked hard.
“I don’t know how to stop being angry about it.”
Emily was quiet for a moment.
“Then be angry.”
Richard looked at the phone.
“Just don’t call it protecting me.”
My Son Walked Out Before I Could Stop Him
Richard pushed his chair back.
“I need some air.”
Jason suddenly stood too.
“Of course you do.”
Richard turned.
“What is that supposed to mean?”
“You spent eight years thinking I’m some monster who ruined her life, and now she tells you that’s not the whole story, and you still can’t even look at me.”
Richard stepped closer.
“Because the part I was right about was bad enough.”
Jason’s jaw tightened.
“I’m not twenty-seven anymore.”
“That doesn’t give Emily those years back.”
“Dad!”
Emily’s voice cracked through the phone.
Both men froze.
I stood.
“Enough.”
Jason pointed toward Richard.
“He will never let this go.”
I looked at my son.
“Maybe not.”
Jason stared at me.
“And you’re okay with that?”
“I’m okay with him being angry.”
Jason’s face hardened.
“Wow.”
“I’m not okay with him treating you like the only thing you’ve ever done is hurt Emily.”
Richard looked at me.
I turned toward him.
“And I’m not okay with Jason using one fact you got wrong to erase everything he did.”
Jason’s face went red.
“I didn’t erase anything.”
“You’ve spent two days saying Richard doesn’t know the whole story.”
“Because he didn’t!”
“Neither did you.”
Jason stared at me.
“What does that mean?”
“You thought Emily’s decision to leave the house plan proved the relationship was already finished.”
