Part 2 of 3

What Mara Had Been Recording

The first pages looked almost ordinary.

Then the dates became more recent.

“Judith asked again why Derek and I still don’t have children.”

“Kelsey damaged her car and Judith asked me to use part of the household money Derek sends home. She said not to tell him because he has enough to worry about.”

“I found loan receipts hidden beneath Kelsey’s sweaters.”

“Judith told me they were none of my business.”

Another page said Mara had been expected to pay groceries, utilities, household repairs, and several of Kelsey’s personal expenses from the money I sent home.

I had believed that money was helping my wife.

Instead, Mara had been quietly stretching it to support everyone.

The entries became more disturbing.

Kelsey had taken out one private loan.

Then another.

When she could not make payments, she borrowed again.

She bought clothes, took weekend trips with friends, invested in two questionable online businesses, and repeatedly promised everyone that money was coming soon.

It never did.

The debt kept growing.

The final entry had been written only hours before I arrived.

The handwriting was shaky.

“Collectors came for Kelsey today.”

I stopped reading.

Then forced myself to continue.

The Lie My Mother Chose

According to Mara’s notebook, Kelsey had hidden in the back of the house when two men came asking about the unpaid loans.

My mother panicked.

Rather than let Kelsey face the consequences of her own choices, Judith told the men that Mara was responsible.

Mara refused to accept the debt.

That was when my mother threatened her.

She told Mara that if she revealed the truth to me, she would tell everyone in town that Mara was involved with another man.

The supposed “other man” was a local electrician named Ben Carver.

I knew Ben.

I had hired him myself months earlier to repair faulty wiring near the laundry room.

Apparently, every time he returned to finish work, my mother and Kelsey used his presence as material for their story.

The final lines were difficult to read.

Mara had tried to explain that none of the loan papers carried her name.

The confrontation became chaotic.

The men had intimidated her and humiliated her by cutting her hair while my family stood nearby instead of protecting her.

My hands tightened around the notebook.

For months, Mara had been keeping records because she feared that one day she would need to prove she was telling the truth.

That day had finally come.

I Needed Proof, Not Anger

I barely slept that night.

Every instinct in me wanted to confront my mother and sister immediately.

But anger would not prove anything.

Documents would.

The next morning, I made breakfast for Mara and asked her to stay in our room.

“Where are you going?”

“To find out whose name is actually on those loans.”

She looked afraid.

“Derek, your mother will know something is wrong.”

“Let her wonder.”

I left without my uniform and drove into Fayetteville.

After several calls, I found the private lender who had issued most of Kelsey’s loans.

His name was Martin Hale, and he worked from a small office connected to a pawn and resale business.

I entered and placed my phone on the desk.

“I’m here about a debt connected to the Ashford household.”

Martin studied me carefully.

“Which woman?”

That question alone told me plenty.

“Show me the signature.”

He hesitated.

I told him I was not there to threaten him. I simply wanted photographs of any document that supposedly proved my wife owed him money.

Eventually, he showed me copies.

One page.

Then another.

Then another.

Every one carried the same name.

Kelsey Ashford.

Not Mara.

Not once.

The Video Nobody Expected

I photographed each document.

Then I looked at Martin.

“So tell me why my wife was blamed for your customer’s debt.”

He shifted in his chair.

“We were told she was responsible for the household money.”

“By whom?”

Martin sighed.

Then he pulled out his phone.

One of his employees had recorded part of an earlier conversation because disagreements over unpaid loans sometimes became complicated.

The video began.

Kelsey appeared on-screen.

She was wearing a new coat and carrying the same handbag I had seen the day before.

“Please give me another week,” she said in the recording. “My brother is in the military. When he comes home, there will be money.”

A few moments later, my mother entered the frame.

One of the men asked what guarantee they had that someone would pay.

My mother looked toward the kitchen.

Then she said something I never expected to hear from her.

“My daughter-in-law handles the money. Deal with her. Leave my daughter alone.”

I replayed that sentence twice.

Martin looked uncomfortable.

I saved the evidence.

At that moment, I thought I understood the entire scheme.

I was wrong.

The Land My Father Left Behind

On the drive back, I stopped at a gas station outside town.

As I stepped out of my truck, an older man called my name.

It was Walter Price, one of my late father’s closest friends.

He shook my hand, then gave me a confused look.

“Derek, I’ve been meaning to ask you something. Did you approve the sale of your father’s land?”

My stomach dropped.

“What sale?”

Walter’s face changed.

He immediately realized I knew nothing.

The land he meant was a small wooded parcel near an old church outside town.

My father had owned it for more than thirty years.

He never built on it.

He simply loved the place.

Before he passed away, he told me repeatedly that he wanted it kept in the family.

I drove directly to the county records office.

The property had been sold three days earlier.
