Part 1 of 3

The Little Boy Who Knocked on His Window

Traffic on Interstate 5 had barely moved for twenty minutes.

Cameron Whitlock sat in the back seat of a charcoal-gray SUV, one hand resting on a leather folder while the other scrolled through the final numbers for a major development project in downtown San Diego.

At forty-one, Cameron had become the kind of man business magazines liked to photograph beside glass buildings and expensive cars. Whitlock Urban Properties owned apartment complexes, office towers, and commercial sites across Southern California. His calendar was organized down to the minute, and he disliked anything that interfered with it.

That afternoon, he was supposed to meet a group of investors at 3:30.

The project on the table was worth more than anything his company had closed that year.

His driver, Theo, glanced toward the traffic ahead.

“Something happened near the shoulder. That’s why everything is backed up.”

Cameron barely lifted his eyes from the documents.

“Can we take the next exit?”

“Not from this lane.”

Cameron checked his watch.

3:07.

Then someone tapped on the passenger-side window.

Cameron looked over.

A little boy stood outside.

He appeared to be six or seven, with sandy brown hair falling over his forehead and a faded blue T-shirt that looked too large for him. His face was flushed from the afternoon heat.

He tapped again.

This time Cameron lowered the window.

“Sir, please,” the boy said, struggling to catch his breath. “My mom needs help. My sister is scared, and I don’t know what to do.”

Cameron stared at him for half a second.

He could have told Theo to call someone.

He could have stayed inside.

Instead, something in the child’s frightened expression made him reach for the door.

“Show me where she is.”

A Face He Never Expected to See Again

The boy hurried toward a grassy area beyond the shoulder, weaving around several people who had stopped nearby.

A woman was sitting against the concrete barrier.

Her head rested against the wall, and her eyes were closed.

Beside her sat a little girl wearing a pale yellow dress. She was holding the woman’s hand with both of hers.

Cameron approached quickly.

Then he stopped.

For the first time that afternoon, the noise of traffic seemed to disappear completely.

He knew that face.

Even after years.

Even after the exhaustion visible beneath her eyes.

Even after all the time he had spent convincing himself that chapter of his life was finished.

Audrey Bennett.

The woman he had once planned to marry.

The woman he had left behind nearly seven years earlier.

“Audrey?”

The little girl immediately looked up.

The boy stepped between Cameron and his mother.

“Do you know her?”

Cameron barely heard the question.

Memories were arriving faster than he could control them.

Audrey laughing on the balcony of their tiny first apartment.

Audrey bringing him coffee while he worked through the night.

Audrey telling him she believed he would build something important one day.

And then Cameron accepting a job opportunity that took him away.

At first, he had promised it would only be temporary.

Then the calls became less frequent.

Work grew larger.

His ambitions grew louder.

Eventually, he stopped calling at all.

Cameron knelt beside Audrey.

“Has anyone called for medical help?”

A woman nearby nodded.

“They’re on the way.”

Cameron looked down and noticed a folded document lying beside Audrey’s handbag.

The Whitlock Urban Properties logo was printed across the top.

His heartbeat changed.

He reached for the paper.

It was a notice requiring tenants to leave an older apartment building that his company had recently purchased for redevelopment.

Audrey Bennett’s name was printed beneath the unit number.

At the bottom was the authorization of his corporate office.

Cameron stared at the page.

He had approved the redevelopment project himself.

Two Children With Familiar Eyes

Medical staff arrived minutes later and began attending to Audrey.

Cameron remained beside the children.

The boy had his arm around his sister.

“What are your names?” Cameron asked.

The boy hesitated.

“Owen.”

He pointed toward the girl.

“That’s Sadie.”

Cameron looked at Owen more carefully.

The shape of his eyes.

The slight dimple in his left cheek.

The way one eyebrow lifted when he was suspicious.

Cameron had seen those features before.

Every morning.

In the mirror.

His gaze shifted toward Sadie.

She had Audrey’s soft expression but the same gray-blue eyes as Cameron.

A possibility began forming in his mind.

He immediately tried to reject it.

Seven years.

Two children around six years old.

Audrey.

The timing.

He swallowed.

“How old are you?”

Owen tightened his arm around his sister.

“Six.”

Cameron looked away.

For the first time in years, the man who always knew exactly what to say had no words.

The Hospital Waiting Room

Audrey was taken to a hospital in La Jolla.

Cameron followed with the children.

He canceled the investor meeting without offering an explanation.

His assistant called twice.

His business partner called three times.

Cameron ignored every call.

In the waiting room, Owen and Sadie sat side by side eating sandwiches a nurse had brought them.

Sadie finished half of hers, then carefully wrapped the rest in a napkin.

Cameron noticed.

“You can have another one if you’re hungry.”

Sadie looked at him cautiously.

“I’m saving it for Mom.”

Something tightened in Cameron’s chest.

“They’ll make sure your mom has what she needs.”

Sadie still held onto the sandwich.

Owen watched Cameron closely.

“Are you the man whose name was on the paper?”
