Part 1 of 3

The Little Girl Who Saw What No One Else Could See

Six-year-old Adeline Monroe had spent the entire Saturday morning pretending she was a princess.

She wore a lavender dress with tiny silver stars stitched along the skirt, a plastic tiara that refused to stay straight, and white sneakers that flashed whenever she walked.

Her mother, Kendra Monroe, had promised to take her for ice cream after visiting Adeline’s grandmother outside Lexington, Kentucky.

They were halfway home when Adeline suddenly stopped talking.

A moment earlier, she had been singing along with the radio.

Then she sat straight up in the back seat.

Her face changed.

“Mommy, stop the car.”

Kendra glanced at her through the rearview mirror.

“What is it, honey?”

Adeline pointed toward the wooded slope beside the highway.

“There’s a man down there.”

Kendra slowed slightly but saw nothing except tall grass, trees and the guardrail.

“I don’t see anybody.”

Adeline’s voice became urgent.

“Please stop. The motorcycle man needs help.”

Kendra felt an uncomfortable chill move across her shoulders.

There had been no sound of a collision.

No smoke.

No people waving for assistance.

Still, something in her daughter’s expression convinced her to pull onto the shoulder.

Before Kendra could even finish telling her to stay inside, Adeline had unbuckled herself.

“Adeline, wait!”

The little girl opened the door and hurried toward the guardrail.

Kendra followed.

That was when she saw it.

Far below them, partially hidden behind thick weeds, lay a black motorcycle.

Several feet away was a man wearing a dark riding jacket.

He wasn’t moving.

Kendra immediately reached for her phone.

But Adeline was already climbing carefully down the grassy slope.

The Man Beside the Highway

His name was Travis Rowan, though almost nobody in his motorcycle club called him Travis.

To his friends, he was simply Hawk.

At forty-seven, Hawk had been riding motorcycles for nearly thirty years. He had crossed deserts, mountains and countless highways and had always been the rider people trusted when a road became difficult.

That afternoon, however, he had been returning alone from a memorial gathering in Tennessee.

Something had gone wrong on a quiet stretch of highway.

By the time Adeline reached him, Hawk was barely responsive.

The little girl dropped to her knees beside him, apparently unconcerned about the dirt spreading across her princess dress.

Kendra carefully followed.

“Don’t touch him, sweetheart. Help is coming.”

But Adeline gently placed one small hand against Hawk’s shoulder.

“He can hear me.”

Kendra stared at her.

“How do you know?”

Adeline didn’t answer.

Instead, she leaned closer to the biker.

“Hawk, your brothers are coming. You just have to stay here until they get here.”

Kendra froze.

She had never heard the name Hawk before.

Neither had Adeline.

At least, that was what Kendra believed.

“Sweetheart, how do you know his name?”

Adeline looked at her mother as though the answer should have been obvious.

“The girl told me.”

“What girl?”

Adeline turned toward the empty woods.

“The girl who likes yellow flowers.”

There was nobody there.

The Strange Instructions

Emergency dispatch kept Kendra on the phone while help made its way toward them.

Adeline remained beside Hawk.

She spoke to him quietly, telling him that he wasn’t alone and that people who loved him were coming.

Every few moments, she would glance toward an empty space beside her, almost as though someone was sitting there.

Kendra became increasingly unsettled.

“Adeline, come stand with me.”

The child shook her head.

“I promised.”

“Promised who?”

“Claire.”

Kendra had never known anyone named Claire.

Neither had her daughter.

At least not anyone she could remember.

A few minutes later, Hawk stirred faintly.

Adeline immediately leaned toward him.

“That’s it. Stay awake for me.”

Then she began humming.

It was an old lullaby.

Kendra recognized the melody vaguely but couldn’t remember where she had heard it.

Hawk reacted immediately.

His fingers moved.

His eyelids fluttered.

Then something even stranger happened.

Adeline whispered:

“She says you always called it the moon song.”

Hawk’s eyes opened for less than a second.

His lips barely moved.

One word escaped him.

“Claire?”

Kendra’s heart started pounding.

Before she could ask what he meant, the distant sound of sirens reached them.

The Girl Who Refused to Leave

First responders arrived quickly.

Two state troopers followed.

As professionals began helping Hawk, an officer gently encouraged Adeline to step away.

She refused.

“Not yet.”

Kendra knelt beside her.

“Honey, these people know how to help him. You need to let them work.”

Adeline shook her head again.

“His family isn’t here.”

One of the responders smiled gently.

“We’ll make sure someone contacts his family.”

Adeline looked toward the highway.

“Not that family. His brothers.”

The adults exchanged confused glances.

Then Adeline continued.

“Griffin, Bishop and Red.”

Nobody there understood what she meant.
