His Father Was 25 Minutes Away, but His Brother Was Only Eight. He Made One Call: “Go. Now.” What Happened When His Brother Reached the House Was the Reason That Little Boy Had Risked Calling at All

Part 2 of 3

“Your dad called me. He’s coming too.”

Then another voice came from inside.

Brent.

“You need to leave.”

Corbin remained remarkably calm.

“I’m here to check on Milo.”

“He’s fine.”

“Then let me see him.”

There was a pause.

“This is none of your business.”

Corbin answered without raising his voice.

“He’s my nephew. That makes his well-being my business.”

I heard another vehicle approaching through Corbin’s phone.

Then another.

Help had arrived.

For the first time since Milo’s call, I felt like I could breathe again.

The Little Boy Upstairs

By the time Corbin and the responding professionals entered the house, I was still several miles away.

I could hear only pieces of what was happening.

Footsteps.

Questions.

Doors opening.

Then Corbin called upstairs.

“Milo?”

A small voice answered.

“I’m in my room.”

“Stay right there. I’m coming upstairs.”

My throat tightened.

Then Milo said something I will remember for the rest of my life.

“I tried to call Dad quietly.”

Corbin stopped for a moment.

“You did exactly the right thing, buddy.”

“Is Dad mad?”

That nearly broke me.

I spoke loudly toward the phone even though I did not know whether Milo could hear.

“No! Tell him I’m not mad!”

Corbin heard me.

A moment later, his voice softened again.

“Your dad isn’t mad at you, Milo. He’s proud of you. He’s coming as fast as he can.”

There was another pause.

Then Milo asked, “Can I go with you?”

“Absolutely.”

A minute later, Corbin returned to the phone.

His voice was quieter.

“Wade, I have him.”

I closed my eyes for half a second.

“Is he okay?”

“He’s scared, and his arm needs to be checked, but he’s with me now.”

Those were the first words that allowed me to believe my son was truly safe.

When He Saw My Car

Emergency vehicles were parked along Sycamore Lane when I finally arrived.

Neighbors stood on porches watching from a distance.

I barely remembered turning off the engine.

I opened the door and ran toward the house.

Then I saw Corbin.

He was standing near the front walkway with Milo beside him.

My son’s cheeks were red from crying. His hair was messy, and he held one arm carefully against his body.

The second he saw me, his expression changed.

“Daddy!”

I dropped to my knees.

Milo ran the last few steps with Corbin helping him.

I wrapped my arms around my son as carefully as I could.

He buried his face against my shoulder.

“You came.”

Three words.

That was all.

But I will carry them forever.

“Of course I came.”

“I thought you were at work.”

“Work doesn’t matter more than you.”

He clung tighter.

“I called because I didn’t know who else to call.”

I kissed the top of his head.

“You can always call me.”

Behind us, several adults were speaking with Brent.

I did not turn around.

At that moment, I did not care what explanation he had.

My son needed me more than I needed answers.

The Hospital Room

We went to the hospital afterward so Milo could be examined.

The doctor reassured me that his arm would recover with proper care and time.

Physically, he was going to be okay.

Emotionally, I knew things might take longer.

Milo sat on the hospital bed wrapped in a pale blue blanket. He kept one hand wrapped around two of my fingers.

Every time someone unfamiliar entered the room, his eyes followed them.

Corbin stood near the window.

He looked exhausted.

I looked at him and mouthed, “Thank you.”

He simply nodded.

About forty minutes later, Tessa arrived.

Her face changed the moment she saw Milo.

She hurried toward the bed, but stopped when Milo instinctively moved closer to me.

That small movement said more than any accusation could have.

Tessa covered her mouth.

“Milo…”

He did not answer.

She looked at me.

“Wade, I didn’t know anything was wrong.”

I stared at her for a long moment.

Part of me wanted to shout.

Instead, exhaustion left me with something quieter.

“You needed to know who you were leaving him with.”

Her eyes filled.

“Brent was always good with him when I was there.”

“But you weren’t there today.”
