Her pregnancy was visibly apparent.
Halfway through dinner, Eleanor loudly instructed me to arrange additional wine for her table.
Olivia smiled.
“Could you find me a cushion too, Evelyn? My back gets uncomfortable sitting this long.”
Adrian looked pleased.
They clearly expected me to obey.
Instead, I walked toward the stage and requested the microphone.
I congratulated Eleanor on her birthday.
Then I raised my glass.
“I’d also like to congratulate Adrian, who keeps telling everyone that his future son will inherit the Carter family empire.”
Adrian lifted his glass enthusiastically.
“Naturally! My son will inherit everything I’ve built!”
I smiled.
“Then I hope you understand exactly how much of that empire legally belongs to you.”
The applause faded.
Nathan’s face turned pale.
Rebecca stared at the emerald bracelet Olivia was wearing, apparently recognizing it as an heirloom that had belonged to my grandmother.
I made no further accusations.
The financial investigation needed to continue without compromising the evidence.
Two days later, Adrian stormed into my office.
“Are you investigating my spending behind my back?”
I closed my laptop.
“I’m reviewing unexplained corporate payments. That’s part of my responsibility as CFO.”
He struck my desk with his hand.
“This company has my name on it!”
I looked directly at him.
“The shareholders have legally documented ownership rights, regardless of whose surname appears on the building.”
He leaned forward.
“If you divorce me and damage the company’s valuation, I’ll tell the securities regulators you manipulated our financial statements.”
I remained still.
“You’re threatening to make false allegations because I discovered questionable transactions?”
His expression hardened.
“I’ll do whatever is necessary to protect my son’s future.”
After he left, I preserved the recording of our conversation and forwarded it to Melissa.
That afternoon, shareholders controlling fifty-five percent of the voting rights authorized an emergency independent financial examination.
The conflict was no longer limited to our marriage.
The company itself was now at risk.
PART 4 — TWO HOSPITAL ROOMS AND THE TRUTH ABOUT OLIVIA’S BABY
The strain eventually affected my health.
That evening, I developed frightening chest tightness and difficulty breathing.
Dad drove me to a Seattle hospital.
After examining me, doctors diagnosed a panic attack associated with severe stress and recommended rest and follow-up care.
Adrian never visited.
The following afternoon, Brooke arrived carrying flowers.
She looked around the room before sitting beside my bed.
“Everyone is worried about you, Evelyn. Have you asked your father about guaranteeing that four-million-dollar loan?”
I stared at her.
“You came to the hospital to discuss financing?”
She shrugged.
“Richard says there are urgent supplier payments. Your father could prevent an unnecessary crisis.”
My answer was firm.
“Tell Richard to speak with the independent advisers. My father won’t guarantee debt simply because your family demands it.”
Brooke left without another word.
The next morning, Olivia was admitted to the same hospital after developing serious bleeding during her pregnancy.
Despite emergency treatment, she lost the baby.
When I heard what happened, I felt no satisfaction.
Olivia had treated me cruelly.
But losing a pregnancy was not something I could celebrate.
Adrian reacted differently.
He stormed into the corridor outside my room and began shouting.
“You wanted this! You’ve been trying to destroy everything since my birthday announcement!”
My father stepped between us.
“My daughter is receiving medical care, Adrian. You have absolutely no basis for blaming her for this tragedy.”
Security personnel arrived and escorted Adrian away.
Before leaving, he shouted that our marriage was finished.
I remained in bed, staring at the closed door.
He was finally announcing the end of something his own choices had damaged long ago.
Three days later, Rebecca called.
Her voice trembled.
“Evelyn, I found messages on Nathan’s laptop. I think you need to see them before I confront him.”
We met at a quiet café in Kirkland.
Rebecca opened her computer.
The messages showed conversations between Nathan and Olivia.
One was especially revealing.
You knew the baby was mine before you approached Adrian. Don’t tell him. My brother can give you the life I can’t afford.
Other messages showed Nathan advising Olivia how to approach Adrian, attend professional events, and request expensive gifts.
He had even suggested the waterfront penthouse.
Rebecca began crying.
“My husband arranged for his own brother to support the woman he was having an affair with. And I treated you terribly without knowing the truth.”
I placed my hand over hers.
“You were deceived too, Rebecca. You didn’t create their lies.”
When Rebecca confronted Nathan, he admitted Olivia had become pregnant before beginning her relationship with Adrian.
Olivia later acknowledged the deception.
Adrian learned the truth.
During an argument at the company, he attacked his younger brother.
Police intervened.
Both men were detained following the disturbance.
Meanwhile, the independent financial audit uncovered the structure behind the suspicious payments.
The consulting business receiving corporate funds had been established by Nathan in Nevada.
Its invoices lacked legitimate supporting services.
Company money had been used to pay Nathan’s gambling debts and finance Olivia’s expenses.
Adrian authorized the transfers.
Richard pressured directors to overlook irregularities.
For years, the family had treated Carter Innovations as though corporate resources were their personal property.
Now the documents revealed the pattern they had concealed.
PART 5 — THE APOLOGY THAT ARRIVED AFTER EVERYTHING COLLAPSED

A week later, Adrian asked to meet me at the Bellevue mansion.
When I entered the living room, I barely recognized him.
His eyes were sunken.
His beard was untrimmed.
His normally immaculate clothes hung loosely from his shoulders.
He began crying.
“Olivia lied to me. Nathan betrayed me. Dad’s businesses are drowning in debt. I didn’t know things would end like this.”
He reached toward me.
“Please forgive me, Evelyn. We can begin again. I promise everything will be different.”
I stepped away.
For five years, I had wanted him to acknowledge the pain he caused.
Now that apology had arrived only after his imagined future collapsed.
I asked him:
“Would you be asking for another chance if Olivia’s baby had actually been yours?”
He lowered his eyes.
“Would you be apologizing if the company were financially secure and your family hadn’t been exposed?”
He remained silent.
I placed a divorce agreement on the coffee table.
“I’m ending our marriage, Adrian.”
His expression changed.
