Part 1 of 3

PART 1 — THE HIGHWAY WHERE AVA’S OLD LIFE ENDED

When Ava Marlowe struck the gravel along the interstate, the first sensation that overwhelmed her was not terror.

It was the merciless heat radiating from the asphalt beneath the June sun.

For several seconds, she lay on the shoulder of the highway, struggling to understand how she had ended up there.

The sky stretched endlessly above her.

Her white maternity dress was torn along one side.

Passing trucks sent bursts of wind and dust across her face, their engines roaring only a short distance away.

Then the memories returned.

The argument inside the black luxury sedan.

Her husband’s fingers tightening around her wrist.

The unmistakable fragrance of another woman’s perfume filling the car.

The passenger door opening as the vehicle slowed near the emergency lane.

And the sudden realization that Landon Pierce had forced her out.

Ava turned her head.

The sedan was already moving away.

Through the rear window, she caught a final glimpse of Landon.

He wore the same handsome, polished expression that appeared on real-estate magazine covers throughout Atlanta.

There was no alarm in his eyes.

No concern.

No sign that he intended to stop.

Instead, he smiled.

It was the smile of someone convinced he had finally removed the obstacle standing between him and the fortune he believed he deserved.

Beside him sat Sienna Vale.

Landon’s mistress.

She leaned across the leather seat, raised two fingers to her lips, and blew Ava a mocking kiss.

Then the sedan accelerated toward the next exit.

Ava pressed her right hand into the gravel.

Her left hand immediately moved to her stomach.

She was five months pregnant.

The child growing inside her had been the reason she endured the previous year.

Cold dinners.

Late-night lies.

The humiliation of watching Sienna appear at social events as a supposedly innocent interior designer while everyone seemed to understand her relationship with Landon.

Ava had endured more than she ever imagined possible because she wanted her daughter to have a family.

There had even been a time when Landon seemed excited about becoming a father.

He once rested his hand against Ava’s stomach and promised that having a child would make him a better man.

But whatever sincerity that promise contained disappeared after he discovered the letter from Boston.

The letter concerning Ava’s inheritance.

The letter about Marlowe Holdings.

Ava tried to breathe through the pain in her ribs.

Her hand remained protectively against her abdomen.

“Stay with me, sweetheart,” she whispered. “Please stay with me.”

A tiny flutter moved beneath her palm.

The movement was so faint that she might not have noticed it under ordinary circumstances.

But fear had sharpened every sensation.

Her daughter was moving.

Ava closed her eyes briefly.

That small sign of life gave her the strength to keep going.

Several yards away, her phone lay facedown in the dirt.

The screen was cracked.

A weak signal indicator flickered across the display.

Sienna had thrown the phone from the car after tossing Ava’s purse onto the roadside.

She had probably assumed the damage would prevent Ava from contacting anyone.

Ava began dragging herself toward it.

Each movement sent pain through her body.

Her knee was bleeding.

Scratches burned along her arm.

Her ribs ached whenever she breathed.

But pain meant she was still alive.

And as long as she remained alive, Landon had not succeeded.

Eventually, her fingers closed around the phone.

She turned it over.

The screen still worked.

Ava did not call the local emergency number.

She knew Landon had spent years building relationships with people in county offices, development boards, police fundraisers, and influential private clubs.

She feared that a public call could expose her location before she had secure medical protection.

Instead, she dialed a number she had memorized years before marrying Landon and allowing the Marlowe name to disappear beneath his.

The phone rang three times.

Then a man answered.

“Whitcomb Legal Group.”

Ava swallowed against the dust in her throat.

“Jonathan, it’s Ava Marlowe. I’m near Exit 38 off the interstate. Landon pushed me out of the car, and Sienna was with him. I’m five months pregnant, and I need a private medical team before anyone connected to him finds me.”

For half a second, there was silence.

Then Jonathan Whitcomb’s voice changed completely.

“Don’t move unless you absolutely have to. I’m sending our emergency team immediately.”

Ava struggled to steady her breathing.

“No press. And no local police until I authorize it.”

“Understood, Miss Marlowe. Help is on the way.”

She ended the call.

Then she carefully rolled onto her back and looked toward the cloudless sky.

Traffic continued roaring past.

Her daughter moved again.

Ava smiled despite the pain.

But there was no tenderness in her expression now.

Only determination.

“We’re not ending here,” she whispered. “But the life they stole from us ends today.”

PART 2 — THE SECRET LANDON DISCOVERED TOO LATE

The private medical wing reserved for the Marlowe women stood on a secluded estate outside Boston.

Tall pine trees shielded the building from the surrounding roads.

For generations, the family had maintained strict privacy around its medical arrangements and personal affairs.

Before sunrise, Ava was admitted under a different surname.

By afternoon, an obstetric specialist stood beside her hospital bed with reassuring news.

The baby’s heartbeat was strong.

The pregnancy remained stable.

Ava had suffered bruising and physical strain, but the doctor believed her instinctive movement to protect her abdomen had helped shield the child.

Even so, she required careful monitoring.

The doctor recommended strict rest and avoiding unnecessary stress over the following weeks.

Ava closed her eyes.

Tears slipped into her hair.

For the first time since the highway, she allowed herself to cry.

“Do whatever is necessary,” she whispered. “My daughter comes first.”

After the doctor left, Jonathan Whitcomb entered carrying a leather folder.

He had represented the Marlowe family for nearly forty years.

He remembered Ava as a little girl hiding beneath conference tables while her grandfather conducted meetings that shaped one of New England’s most discreet private investment empires.

Jonathan placed the folder beside her bed.

“Landon filed a missing-person report shortly after midnight.”

Ava opened her eyes.

“Let me guess. He’s claiming I was unstable.”

Jonathan’s expression tightened.

“He says you were suffering from pregnancy-related emotional distress, argued with him, left the house voluntarily, and disappeared without warning.”

Ava stared at him.

He continued.

“He’s already hired a private investigator and contacted several news outlets through people connected to him.”

She laughed bitterly.

“He’s preparing everyone to feel sorry for him.”

Jonathan nodded.

“He’s also trying to establish control over the narrative before the inheritance transfer becomes effective.”

He opened the folder.

Inside was a copy of the letter Landon had discovered.

The original had arrived at their Atlanta residence two weeks earlier.

It was addressed to Ava under her birth name.

The letter confirmed that her grandfather’s final trust arrangement would activate in November.

At that time, majority control of Marlowe Holdings would transfer to Ava as the last direct heir.

Landon had not known the truth about her family when they married.

Ava had deliberately kept the extent of her family’s wealth private.

She wanted to experience a relationship untouched by inheritance, negotiation, or the expectations surrounding old money.

She had told Landon that her family history was complicated.

That her parents were gone.

And that she wanted an ordinary marriage built on affection rather than financial advantage.

For a while, she believed he loved her for that simplicity.

Now she understood he had only tolerated it while he thought there was nothing more useful to gain.

Ava looked toward Jonathan.

“He believes that if I disappear before the transfer, he can gain control through our baby.”

Jonathan considered the documents.

“That appears to be his strategy. As your husband, he could attempt emergency petitions if he managed to convince a court that you were missing, impaired, or dead.”

Ava turned toward the window.

Morning light touched the tops of the pine trees.

Memories of her three-year marriage returned.

Sienna laughing beside Landon at dinners.

His mother’s increasingly curious questions about Ava’s family.

The sudden conversations about trusts and inheritance law.

The telephone calls that stopped whenever Ava entered the room.

Landon had not simply lost his temper on the highway.

He had escalated a plan already taking shape.

Ava rested one hand against her stomach.

When she spoke again, her voice was calm.

“Then let him believe he succeeded.”

Jonathan watched her carefully.
