I Always Defended Him, But After Months Of Unexplained Memory Problems, I Decided To Have The Glass Of Milk He Prepared For Me Every Night Tested At A Laboratory. The Doctor Read The Report, Quietly Closed His Office Door, And Whispered, “Ma’am, Does Your Husband Know You’re Here?”…

Part 2 of 3

“Eleanor, this material appears associated with investigational medical research, and I have serious concerns about your exposure without an informed treatment plan.”

He advised me to undergo a comprehensive medical assessment and remain away from any suspected source while specialists evaluated my condition.

Then he showed me information uncovered during the review of my clinical records.

My full name, date of birth, and residential address appeared in a research-participant database connected to Dr. Mercer’s clinic.

The registration described me as having enrolled in an experimental treatment program.

I stared at the screen.

“I never agreed to participate in medical research. I thought the appointment was simply a preventative health examination.”

Dr. Foster examined the available consent documentation.

Several forms contained broad language that hadn’t been adequately explained to me.

The records also raised questions about whether the signature and consent process accurately represented what I had been told.

Nathan’s investment company was identified among the program’s financial supporters.

I suddenly remembered his insistence that I didn’t need to read the paperwork.

Before we could discuss the next steps, an assistant entered carrying an envelope addressed to me.

There was no sender’s name.

Inside lay an old photograph taken in a hospital room twenty-seven years earlier.

A young man stood beside a frail, silver-haired woman resting against white pillows.

The man looked almost exactly like Nathan.

But twenty-seven years earlier, Nathan would have been a small child.

The woman was even more disturbing.

Her face, hair, and expression resembled my own so closely that I initially thought someone had altered a photograph of me.

On the back, someone had written:

Ask your husband what happened to the three women who came before you.

Judith looked frightened.

“Eleanor, whoever sent this clearly knows something about the people involved in that research.”

I turned the photograph over again.

The woman appeared ill, but there was something familiar about her eyes.

I wondered whether Nathan had chosen me because I reminded him of someone.

Then a voice came from the doorway.

“Eleanor, I can explain the photograph, but you have to let me tell you the entire story.”

Nathan stood outside Dr. Foster’s office.

For the first time since meeting him, I didn’t feel comforted by his presence.

I felt afraid.

PART 5 — THE WOMAN WHO LOOKED EXACTLY LIKE ME

Nathan entered only after Dr. Foster confirmed that I was willing to hear him.

Judith remained beside my chair.

I placed the photograph on the desk.

“Tell me who this woman is, Nathan, and don’t insult me with another explanation about vitamins or flavoring.”

He stared at the image.

His composure disappeared.

“Her name was Clara Ellison, and my father loved her before I was old enough to understand what that meant.”

Nathan explained that Clara had developed a progressive neurological illness.

His father, Dr. Alexander Caldwell, was a physician and medical researcher who became obsessed with finding a treatment that could reverse her deterioration.

The photograph showed Alexander beside Clara twenty-seven years earlier.

Their resemblance explained why I had mistaken Alexander for an older photograph of Nathan.

But it didn’t explain why Clara looked almost exactly like me.

Nathan continued.

His father believed certain biological and physical characteristics could help identify people suitable for the experimental treatment.

After Clara’s condition worsened, Alexander continued researching women who resembled her.

Three other women were later recruited into successive experimental programs.

Each experienced serious medical complications, and some eventually died.

Nathan discovered parts of the research history while examining his late father’s records.

Instead of reporting the findings or abandoning the project, he became determined to continue it.

His investment company provided funding through arrangements connected to Dr. Mercer’s clinic.

I stared at him.

“And you chose me because I looked like Clara?”

Nathan lowered his eyes.

“Your profile appeared in a research database before the charity gala. I recognized the resemblance and wanted to learn more about you.”

My stomach tightened.

I remembered the fundraiser.

The book tucked inside my handbag.

The astonishing way he knew my favorite childhood stories.

“You investigated my private life before approaching me, didn’t you?”

He nodded.

“I read the information available in your profile, including your interests, medical background, and personal history.”

The admission felt more humiliating than anything I had heard before.

Every thoughtful gift suddenly looked calculated.

Every apparently spontaneous conversation became part of a carefully prepared performance.

“You knew how to make me trust you because you had studied me before we even met.”

Nathan began crying.

“I did fall in love with you, Eleanor. That part wasn’t planned, and I swear my feelings became real.”

I looked at him.

“Real love would have allowed me to choose whether I wanted to participate in your research.”

He had no answer.

PART 6 — THE CONFESSION THAT ENDED MY MARRIAGE

Nathan admitted that he had deliberately manipulated my medical paperwork.

He also acknowledged adding the investigational substance to my evening milk without telling me.

According to him, Dr. Mercer had continued monitoring my symptoms while interpreting my worsening memory and exhaustion as part of the research process.

Nathan claimed he had believed the treatment might eventually prove beneficial.

He insisted that he never intended to hurt me.

I listened until he finished.

Then I asked the question that had been haunting me since the night I overheard his telephone call.

“You already knew three other women had suffered serious consequences. Why did you believe I would somehow be different?”

His face crumpled.

“Because I thought I understood where my father’s research failed, and I believed we could correct those mistakes.”

I shook my head.

“You didn’t correct anything, Nathan. You repeated his obsession with another woman’s life.”

Dr. Foster ended the conversation when I said I didn’t want Nathan near me anymore.

Judith accompanied me home to collect a few belongings.

I refused to spend another night inside the mansion.

Within days, I retained legal representation and initiated proceedings to end the marriage.

The attorney also assisted me in reporting the suspected unauthorized research and medical misconduct to the appropriate regulatory and investigative authorities.

I provided the test results, photographs, correspondence, and available clinical records.

Dr. Foster documented my symptoms and arranged follow-up examinations with specialists who had no professional connection to Nathan.

My health remained uncertain.
