“How Old Are They?” My Ex-Husband Asked After Three Little Girls Wrapped Their Arms Around Me Outside The Airport. His Confident Smile Had Completely Disappeared. I Looked At Him And Said, “Four.” Nearly Five Years Had Passed Since Our Divorce. He Looked At Their Faces Again, Did The Math, And Suddenly Had No More Questions.

Part 2 of 3

The thought made me smile.

Grant noticed.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You smiled.”

“I’m allowed.”

“Was it something I said?”

“No.”

That seemed to bother him more than it reasonably should have.

The captain announced our descent into Charlotte.

I put away my book and reached beneath the seat for my bag.

Grant adjusted his cuff links.

“Someone picking you up?”

“Yes.”

He glanced sideways.

“Boyfriend?”

I almost laughed.

“You truly do not give up.”

“I’m curious.”

“You have established that.”

“So?”

I looked directly at him.

“Someone is picking me up.”

Grant shook his head with faint amusement.

“You always liked making me work for an answer.”

That was the moment I finally corrected him.

“No, Grant. You always assumed you were entitled to one.”

For once, he had nothing ready to say.

PART 4: WHAT HE COULD NOT SEE

When the plane touched down, my phone immediately filled with notifications.

One message made me grin before I could stop myself.

WE’RE HERE!!!

Below it were multiple heart emojis and a blurred photograph containing three excited little faces pressed together in the back seat of a vehicle.

I typed quickly.

“Mom just landed. Stay with Aunt Rebecca until I get outside.”

Grant glanced toward the screen but could not read it.

“Popular?”

“Something like that.”

We left the aircraft with the other first-class passengers and walked through the terminal in roughly the same direction.

Grant seemed increasingly relaxed, perhaps because he believed the encounter had confirmed whatever narrative he had carried about me.

Five years after our divorce, he had found his former wife.

No husband visible.

No enormous ring.

No display of wealth.

No dramatic transformation designed to make him regret losing me.

In his mind, perhaps the story made perfect sense.

He had always valued visible evidence.

That had been one of our deepest differences.

During our marriage, Grant believed success should be seen.

I increasingly believed the best things in life were usually experienced privately.

Five years earlier, I had left with one suitcase, my dignity, and no clear understanding of what came next.

What came next was terrifying.

It was also mine.

My first apartment after the divorce had furniture assembled with instructions I barely understood and a dining table that doubled as my office. I spent evenings reviewing environmental reports while eating takeout beside spreadsheets because hiring staff was still financially impossible.

Then one project succeeded.

A municipal contract followed.

Later came a corporate remediation assessment that provided enough revenue for my first employee.

I built my company without Grant’s name, his contacts, or his money.

But the largest part of my new life had nothing to do with business.

That part was waiting outside the terminal.

PART 5: THREE LITTLE GIRLS

The automatic doors opened, and warm North Carolina air rolled across the passenger pickup area.

Cars moved through the lanes while drivers loaded luggage and families reunited beneath directional signs.

I searched the curb.

Then I saw the black SUV.

My entire body relaxed.

The vehicle pulled closer, and before I reached it, one rear door opened.

A small figure jumped out.

Then another.

Then a third.

A woman inside called urgently:

“Grace, wait for your sisters!”

Too late.

Grace was already running.

Lily followed several steps behind, while Sophie hurried after both of them with the determined, slightly unbalanced speed of a four-year-old who had decided normal walking was unacceptable.

Three matching voices rose over the noise outside the terminal.

“Mommy!”

I dropped my bag.

All three girls reached me almost simultaneously.

I bent just before six small arms wrapped around my neck, shoulders, and waist.

Their laughter collided with mine.

Grace was trying to explain something about preschool.

Lily insisted she had missed me more than either sister.

Sophie held up a folded paper that apparently contained a drawing she had made specifically for my return.

“I missed you!”

“I missed you more!”

“Mommy, look what I made!”

“You said I can sleep in your room tonight!”

I kissed one forehead, then another, then the third.

For several seconds, the airport disappeared.

There was only the smell of children’s shampoo, little hands tangled in my hair, excited voices interrupting one another, and the overwhelming relief of being home.

Then I remembered Grant.

I looked over my shoulder.

He had stopped several yards behind us.

Completely motionless.

The confident half-smile was gone.

His expression had changed so completely that for a moment he looked like someone else.

His eyes moved first to Grace.

Then Lily.

Then Sophie.

My stomach tightened.

The girls continued talking, but I barely heard them now.

Grant took one step closer.

Only one.

His gaze moved across their faces again, more slowly this time.

Grace noticed him and leaned against my hip.

Lily took my hand.

Sophie simply stared at him with open curiosity.

Grant swallowed.

“Caroline…”

I stood.

“What?”

His voice sounded nothing like it had on the airplane.

There was no amusement in it now.

No confidence.

Only uncertainty.

“How old are they?”

The question hovered between us.

I looked at him for several seconds.

Then I answered.

“Four.”

Grant did not move.

His eyes returned to the three girls.
