Part 2 of 3

Then I walked out.

PART 4 – PANIC LEAVES BETTER RECORDS THAN CONFIDENCE

The next thirty-six hours gave me more evidence than the previous four months.

Our technology director, Owen Brooks, called before noon.

“Daniel attempted to delete a financial folder remotely.”

“Did he succeed?”

“He thinks he did.”

The folder was called Meridian Strategy.

Our external backups had preserved everything.

Meridian Strategy Partners was an LLC created eight months earlier by Daniel and Paige.

The forensic accountant traced fake supplier retainers, duplicate reimbursement requests, luxury weekend travel, and inflated vendor deposits into Meridian’s account.

Then the most serious problem appeared.

Several transfer approvals contained a scanned copy of my signature.

One approval authorized $9,400 while I was speaking at a hospitality conference in Atlanta.

My flight records, badge scans, and conference video proved I had been hundreds of miles away.

Paige had submitted the transfer from her company laptop.

That night, she entered Hartwell’s office through a service entrance using an old physical key.

Security logs showed her access.

A loading-bay camera recorded her carrying two archive boxes into her car.

She thought she was removing evidence.

Instead, she documented consciousness of the investigation.

By Wednesday evening, the suspected loss reached $87,430.

Daniel called twenty-one times.

Paige messaged our parents claiming I was unstable from jealousy and was using the company to punish them.

I responded to neither.

Following my attorney’s advice, I moved only the lawful portion of marital funds I was entitled to protect, filed for legal separation, and provided the audit package to outside corporate counsel.

Thursday morning, I called an emergency board meeting.

PART 5 – THE GLASS ROOM

My parents arrived early.

They looked exhausted.

Paige entered wearing a cream blouse and pearl earrings, dressed like someone hoping softness might substitute for evidence.

Daniel arrived last in a dark navy suit.

Our corporate attorney, Benjamin Cross, placed a sealed binder before every seat.

As I passed Daniel, he leaned close.

“By tonight, you will lose your husband and your family.”

I turned on the presentation screen.

“By tonight, I will know what parts of either were real.”

The first slide showed the parking footage.

The second showed hotel invoices.

Then restaurant charges.

Then access logs.

Then the Meridian bank transfers.

I spoke for eleven minutes without raising my voice.

Paige began crying when the forged approvals appeared.

“Natalie told me I could sign for her.”

I enlarged one authorization.

“This was submitted from your laptop on September eighteenth at 2:42 p.m. I was delivering a keynote in Atlanta at that exact time.”

The next slide showed my event video, travel itinerary, and authentication records.

Paige’s crying stopped.

Benjamin Cross explained the board’s immediate options: termination for cause, civil recovery, and referral of suspected financial misconduct to appropriate authorities.

Daniel laughed.

“Her parents are not going to send Paige into a criminal investigation because Natalie is angry about an affair.”

My father closed the binder.

“I support all three actions.”

My mother’s voice trembled.

“So do I.”

Paige stared at them.

“You are choosing her over me?”

My mother shook her head.

“I am choosing evidence over denial.”

Daniel lost control.

He lunged toward my tablet.

I pulled it away.

He seized my forearm and shoved me backward.

My hip struck a conference chair and I fell against the edge of the table, splitting my lower lip.

The tablet slid across the carpet while the parking footage continued playing.

Daniel raised his hand again.

Building security entered before he could do anything else.

I looked toward the ceiling camera.

Every board member had witnessed what happened.

Daniel had spent days arguing that I was unstable.

Then he demonstrated instability himself.

PART 6 – WHAT MERIDIAN WAS REALLY FOR

The audit continued after Daniel and Paige were removed from the company.

Meridian was more sophisticated than a simple expense account.

Paige had created false vendor profiles using information copied from legitimate suppliers.

Daniel approved payments through operations.

Some money funded hotels, jewelry, and private travel.

Other amounts went toward a down payment on a condominium they intended to use after my marriage ended.

Two real vendors had also been told Hartwell introduced a new “preferred partner coordination fee.”

Those vendors paid Meridian directly because Paige represented the fee as official company policy.

One email stated:

“Daniel has approved the structure, and Natalie is fully aware.”

I had never seen it.

Discovery in the divorce later produced messages between Daniel and Paige.

In one, Daniel wrote:

“Once we separate, her fifty-two percent will not matter the way she thinks. Her parents will never publicly destroy Paige.”

Another message said:

“Natalie hates scandal more than she loves control.”

That sentence explained his entire strategy.

For twelve years, I had often sacrificed confrontation to preserve appearances.

Daniel mistook restraint for permanent permission.

PART 7 – MY PARENTS HAD TO ANSWER FOR MORE THAN PAIGE

Two weeks later, my parents asked to meet privately.

My mother cried before anyone spoke.

“I keep wondering how Paige became capable of this.”

My father answered before I did.

“We taught her that consequences were temporary.”

Paige had always been the younger daughter who apologized beautifully.

If she missed deadlines, somebody repaired the damage.

If she borrowed money, repayment became optional.

If she created conflict, I was expected to be mature enough to end it.

I had become the reliable daughter.

She had become the protected one.

Daniel noticed that arrangement and built his plan around it.

“I am not fixing this for everyone,” I told them.

My mother nodded.

“I know.”

“That also means you do not ask me to forgive Paige because she is my sister.”

She looked down.
