For Eight Years, My Mother-In-Law Treated Me Like The Family’s Unpaid Servant. The First Time I Said “No,” She Demanded My Address So She Could Teach Me A Lesson. I Sent Her The One Place She Never Expected… My Husband’s Secret Home With His Pregnant Girlfriend.

Part 2 of 3

When Natalie showed him the messages, his explanation changed again.

“I did not plan for this to happen,” he said. “Paige understands me in a way you stopped trying to understand years ago.”

“Understanding you apparently requires a secret lease and prenatal bills.”

Daniel sat down and rubbed his face.

“I am happier with her. She appreciates what I do, and she does not criticize every decision.”

Natalie opened another folder.

“Then you should be delighted to move there permanently.”

For one moment, relief appeared in Daniel’s eyes. He had expected tears, pleading, and negotiations. He had prepared himself to present the affair as a painful but inevitable transition toward a more fulfilling life.

Natalie placed the financial records in front of him.

Over ten months, Daniel had transferred more than $74,000 from their joint accounts. The money paid for rent, utilities, designer furniture, medical appointments, restaurant meals, maternity clothing, and a leased SUV for Paige.

He had also withdrawn nearly $18,000 from the education savings accounts established for Caleb and Sophie.

Daniel’s relief vanished.

“I earned most of that money.”

“We both funded those accounts, and the education money belongs to the children.”

“It is still family money, and this baby is also my family.”

Natalie’s voice remained steady.

“You decided Caleb and Sophie should finance the family replacing them.”

Daniel dropped to his knees beside the table, although his expression contained no concern for Natalie’s pain.

“Paige could deliver early, and stress is dangerous for her. I already had a separation agreement prepared. If you sign it quickly, we can keep this civilized.”

He removed papers from his briefcase.

The proposed agreement granted Natalie primary daily responsibility for the children while allowing Daniel flexible visitation. It waived any claim to portions of his retirement account, divided the mortgage debt equally, and classified most of the Roseville expenses as legitimate marital spending.

“You planned to present this after Christmas?” Natalie asked.

“I wanted to avoid disrupting the children during the holidays.”

“You emptied part of their college funds before protecting them from disruption.”

Daniel admitted that Paige was seven months pregnant and that he intended to introduce her after the divorce announcement. Linda believed Natalie was becoming difficult, but Daniel had not told his mother about the pregnancy because he wanted everything settled first.

Natalie stood and pointed toward the hallway.

“Pack what you need and leave tonight.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You cannot throw me out of my own house.”

“Then remain here while I call my attorney and explain why I no longer feel financially safe sharing a home with you.”

He packed two suitcases and left before two o’clock.

The following morning, Natalie changed the electronic door codes, opened a separate bank account, froze joint credit cards, and met attorney Rebecca Sloan, a family law specialist recommended by Jasmine.

Rebecca instructed her to preserve every message, photograph, receipt, loan document, and financial statement.

“Do not threaten him, do not post anything online, and do not negotiate privately,” Rebecca warned. “Your strongest position comes from remaining calm while the records tell the story.”

Two weeks later, Linda called to assign Natalie the Christmas cooking schedule.

She expected prime rib, glazed ham, sweet potato casserole, three desserts, homemade rolls, and breakfast for relatives staying overnight. Natalie informed her that she would spend Christmas with Caleb, Sophie, and her parents.

Linda responded with insults before demanding Natalie’s address.

Natalie sent the Roseville townhouse location.

Christmas Came Early

Linda drove from Redding to Roseville that afternoon with her daughter, Melissa. During the three-hour journey, she left nineteen messages accusing Natalie of poisoning Daniel against his family.

Natalie did not respond.

She took the children to an early holiday dinner at her parents’ house and kept her phone face down beside her plate.

The exact account of what happened at the townhouse reached Natalie through Melissa, who later called to apologize.

Linda pounded on the front door while shouting Natalie’s name.

Paige answered barefoot, wearing a cream maternity dress beneath an open cardigan. Behind her stood a decorated Christmas tree surrounded by expensive baby equipment, framed ultrasound photographs, and a large portrait of Daniel with his arms around Paige.

“Who are you?” Linda demanded.

“I live here,” Paige replied. “Who are you?”

Daniel entered the hallway carrying a package of newborn diapers.

“Mom, what are you doing here?”

Linda looked at Daniel, Paige’s stomach, and the ultrasound photographs.

“Is this where you have been living?”

Daniel attempted to guide her inside.

“I can explain everything, but you need to lower your voice.”

“You told me Natalie was becoming cold and unreasonable. You never told me you had moved into a second home with another woman.”

Paige folded her arms.

“Daniel told me his marriage had been over for almost two years.”

Linda turned on her.

“Do not pretend you are innocent when you are standing inside a home paid for by his wife.”

Paige responded that Linda had raised a man who lied whenever responsibility became inconvenient. Daniel attempted to interrupt, but both women redirected their anger toward him.

The confrontation spilled into the shared walkway. Neighbors opened doors, while Melissa begged everyone to stop shouting.

Linda began experiencing chest pain and dizziness. Paramedics transported her to the hospital with dangerously elevated blood pressure, although doctors later confirmed that she had not suffered a heart attack.

Daniel called Natalie thirty-four times.

She answered the thirty-fifth call after the children had gone to bed.

“How could you send my mother to that address?” he shouted. “She is in the hospital because of you.”

“Your mother demanded to know where her family lived, so I showed her where her son had chosen to live.”

“You wanted to hurt her.”

“I stopped protecting you from information she had every right to know.”

“You are cruel.”

Natalie looked toward the hallway where Caleb and Sophie were sleeping.

“Cruelty is taking money from your children while pretending you are working for their future.”

She ended the call.

The next morning, a hospital social worker contacted Natalie because Linda had listed her as the emergency caregiver. Natalie calmly explained that she was separated from Daniel and that Melissa or Daniel should handle Linda’s discharge arrangements.

For eight years, Natalie had solved every crisis Linda created.

This time, she did not leave work, collect medication, prepare meals, or reorganize her home.

Three days later, Daniel arrived at the Sacramento house.

“Mom needs somewhere to recover,” he said. “Paige is pregnant, Melissa cannot take time away from her job, and I have end-of-year client renewals.”

Natalie stared at him.

“You want me to care for the woman who threatened me because your girlfriend does not want her inside the townhouse?”

“It would only be for several weeks. Whatever happened between us, Mom considers you family.”

“She considered me staff.”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Please behave like a compassionate person.”

“Compassion would have included attending Caleb’s competition or leaving Sophie’s savings untouched.”

Natalie closed the door.

Linda eventually recovered and called from an unfamiliar number.
