Coins with Queen Elizabeth II’s face on to enter circulation for final time

The Royal Mint has confirmed that 30.855 million newly minted £1 coins will be introduced into circulation across the United Kingdom.

Of this release, 23.29 million will be the final £1 coins to feature the portrait of the late Queen Elizabeth II. Alongside them, 7.565 million coins will carry the official portrait of King Charles III, including 170,000 pieces dated 2025. This marks the last time coins with the Queen’s image will be released into circulation.

A Symbolic Transition

The new £1 design forms part of King Charles III’s Definitive collection, which draws inspiration from the rich flora and fauna of the British Isles.

The coin featuring Queen Elizabeth II—who passed away in 2022 at the age of 96—will also include the rarest £1 coin currently in circulation.

Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint, described the release as a landmark moment:
“This release represents a pivotal moment in British coinage history. As we release more of the King Charles III £1 coins into circulation alongside the final coins of Queen Elizabeth II, we’re witnessing the physical representation of our monarchy’s transition.”

An Opportunity for Collectors

Morgan added: “This dual release creates an exceptional opportunity for both seasoned numismatists and those new to coin collecting. Coin collecting offers a fascinating window into our nation’s history and culture. Finding these new coins in your change could spark a rewarding hobby that connects you with the heritage, history and craftsmanship behind British currency.”

Coins in Circulation Today

At present, around 24.7 billion coins are in circulation across the UK. Of these, King Charles III coins make up only 0.004 percent of the total. Importantly, all UK coins featuring Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait will remain valid legal tender and continue to be used in everyday transactions.
