Part 1 of 3

Five Minutes After Our Divorce, My Ex-Husband Told Me to Take Our Daughters Because He Was Finally Having a Son. He Had No Idea I Was an Army Colonel—or That His Family Was Hiding a Secret About His Unborn Heir.

The Five Minutes That Changed Everything

Five minutes after our divorce was finalized, my ex-husband looked directly at me and said something I would remember for the rest of my life.

“Take the girls, Meredith. I have a son on the way now. I need to focus on my new family.”

He said it with such confidence that I almost wondered whether he understood what he was giving up.

Our daughters, ten-year-old Willa and six-year-old Phoebe, were waiting at my sister’s house. They had spent months trying to understand why their father was moving out, why another woman was suddenly part of his life, and why their grandmother kept talking about the baby boy who would finally carry on the family name.

Now their father was treating them as though they belonged to a chapter he had already finished reading.

My name is Meredith Whitcomb. For twelve years, I was married to Derek Whitcomb, the son of a wealthy real estate developer in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Derek believed I worked a fairly ordinary government job. He knew I served in the Army, but he had never shown much interest in my responsibilities.

What he apparently didn’t understand was that I had been promoted to colonel nearly three years earlier.

He had missed the ceremony.

He had also ignored the documents explaining that our daughters and I would soon be relocating overseas.

But Derek was about to discover that overlooking important things could have consequences far beyond a missed appointment.

And before that afternoon ended, he would learn something else.

The baby boy his family had been celebrating might not be his child at all.

A Marriage That Had Been Ending for Years

Derek liked to tell people that our marriage had simply run its course.

It was an explanation that made him comfortable because it required neither honesty nor accountability.

The truth was considerably different.

For years, I had adjusted my schedule around his career, attended his family gatherings, remembered birthdays he forgot, and made excuses when he missed our daughters’ school events.

His mother, Lorraine Whitcomb, had never been particularly welcoming.

She often reminded me that the Whitcomb family needed a male heir.

“Two daughters are lovely, of course,” she once remarked during Thanksgiving dinner. “But someone eventually needs to continue the family legacy.”

Willa had been sitting close enough to hear her.

I remembered how quietly my daughter had finished her dessert that evening.

Derek dismissed my concerns.

“Mom’s old-fashioned. You know how she is.”

I did know.

I also knew that every time Derek remained silent, his mother became more comfortable making our daughters feel less important.

Seven months before our divorce, I discovered that Derek had been spending weekends with a woman named Celeste Monroe.

He claimed they were working together on a development project.

Then I found a hotel reservation in Savannah that had nothing to do with business.

When I questioned him, he accused me of imagining problems.

Three weeks later, I discovered messages that confirmed what I already suspected.

I stopped asking for explanations.

Instead, I spoke with an attorney, organized our financial records, and began making arrangements for the girls.

My upcoming military assignment had already been approved.

The relocation provisions were discussed during our divorce proceedings, and Derek’s attorney received the necessary documents well in advance.

Derek signed the agreement without paying much attention.

He was far more interested in preparing for Celeste’s baby.

The Phone Call That Changed His Confidence

Four hours after we left the courthouse, I was sitting inside a family waiting area at a military installation.

Willa was helping Phoebe close her backpack while I reviewed our travel documents.

My phone rang.

Derek.

I considered letting it go unanswered.

Then I picked up.

“Meredith, where are you?”

“I’m preparing to leave.”

“Leave where?”

“For my assignment.”

He sounded confused.

“What assignment? You’re not seriously taking the girls out of the country.”

“Derek, you signed the relocation agreement.”

“I thought that was for temporary travel.”

“Your attorney explained the arrangement, and you initialed the relevant pages.”

There was a pause.

“You should have reminded me.”

I looked through the glass at our daughters.

“You had more than two months to ask questions.”

His breathing changed.

“Things are complicated right now.”

“What happened?”

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he spoke in a voice I barely recognized.

“Celeste had another appointment. The doctor says the pregnancy dates might not be what we expected.”

I remained quiet.

“Meredith, there’s a possibility the baby isn’t mine.”

I closed my eyes.

That morning, Derek had proudly told me he no longer needed our daughters because he was expecting a son.

Now, only hours later, he was calling me because his new future had become uncertain.

“Have you had a paternity test?” I asked.

“No.”

“Then you don’t have an answer yet. Pregnancy dating alone cannot establish paternity.”

“Celeste admitted there was someone else.”

I felt a strange sadness.

Not for our marriage.

That had ended long before the courthouse.

I felt sad because Derek was beginning to experience the uncertainty he had once dismissed when I discovered his relationship with Celeste.

“You need to speak with her, Derek.”

“I need you to postpone your departure.”

“Why?”

“Because I can’t deal with everything at once.”

I looked at the two little girls who had spent months learning to live with their father’s absence.

“You don’t get to make your problems our emergency anymore.”

The Daughters He Suddenly Remembered

Derek called again twenty minutes later.

This time, he wanted to speak with Willa and Phoebe.

“They’re still my children,” he insisted.

“They have always been your children.”

“Then let me see them.”

“I’ll ask whether they want to talk.”

I walked into the family room and sat beside my daughters.

Willa looked up from her book.

“Mom, is everything okay?”

“Your father is asking whether you’d like to say goodbye before we leave.”

Phoebe stopped coloring.

“He wants to see us?”

“Yes, sweetheart.”

Willa studied my face.

“Did he finally read the papers?”

Her question surprised me.

“What makes you ask that?”

She hesitated.

“Last week, I heard him talking to Uncle Bennett. He said it didn’t matter where we lived because Celeste’s baby would need the big nursery.”

Phoebe looked up sharply.

“My room?”

Willa immediately looked upset with herself.

I moved closer to Phoebe.

“You will always have a room and a home with me.”

Her lower lip trembled.

“But Daddy helped me put the stars on my ceiling.”

I remembered those little glowing stars.

Phoebe had counted them every night when she was younger.

“We can put stars in your new room too,” I promised.

Willa closed her book.

“I don’t want to see Dad today.”

Phoebe leaned against her sister.

“Me neither.”

I respected their decision.

When I told Derek, he immediately accused me of turning the girls against him.

“I didn’t tell them what you said at the courthouse,” I replied. “But Willa heard what you said about giving Phoebe’s room to the baby.”

He went quiet.

For once, there was no explanation ready.

The Colonel He Had Never Bothered to Know

Shortly afterward, the security office informed me that Derek and his mother had arrived outside the installation.

They had apparently followed a government vehicle from the residence where I had been staying.
