The Night Grant Came Home Too Soon

Grant Whitmore was supposed to be in Chicago until Friday afternoon.

For four exhausting days, he had been negotiating a partnership that could reshape the future of the technology company he had spent fifteen years building. By Thursday evening, however, the final papers were signed earlier than expected.

Instead of staying another night at the hotel, Grant booked the first flight back to Connecticut.

He wanted to surprise his wife, Audrey.

More than anything, he wanted to hold their six-week-old son, Caleb.

Grant lived with his family in a large home outside Greenwich, a property that had belonged to the Whitmore family for generations. His mother, Lenora, occupied the east wing whenever she visited, which lately seemed to mean almost every week.

As his car entered the driveway that cold December evening, Grant expected to see the warm lights Audrey always left burning near the front windows.

Instead, nearly every light in the house was glowing.

Luxury vehicles filled the driveway.

Through the windows, he could see elegantly dressed guests holding glasses and talking beneath elaborate holiday decorations.

Grant frowned.

Audrey had said nothing about a party.

When he stepped inside, music drifted through the foyer. Servers carried trays between groups of guests while Lenora stood near the fireplace wearing an elegant navy gown, laughing as though the house belonged entirely to her.

Her smile changed the moment she noticed her son.

“Grant? What are you doing home tonight?”

Something about the question bothered him.

Not welcome home.

Not what a wonderful surprise.

Why was he there?

Grant glanced around.

“Where’s Audrey?”

Lenora lifted her glass.

“Resting, probably. She’s been terribly emotional lately. You know how new mothers can be.”

Grant’s stomach tightened.

He walked past her without answering.

“Grant,” Lenora called after him. “Please don’t make a scene. I have important guests here.”

He was already climbing the stairs.

A Sound Behind a Locked Door

The second floor felt strangely cold and silent compared with the celebration below.

Grant checked the bedroom first.

Empty.

Then Caleb’s nursery.

Also empty.

His heart began beating faster.

“Audrey?”

Nothing.

He walked farther down the hallway.

Then he heard something.

A faint sound.

Scratching.

Grant stopped.

It came from a storage room beside the dressing area.

He grabbed the handle.

Locked.

“Audrey?”

A weak voice answered from behind the door.

“Grant?”

His blood went cold.

He forced the door open.

Audrey was sitting on the floor wrapped in a thin robe, trembling from the cold. There were visible marks along one side of her face, and her eyes were swollen from crying.

For several seconds, Grant could not speak.

Audrey reached toward him.

“Caleb. Please find Caleb.”

Grant dropped to his knees.

“What happened?”

“Your mother took my phone. Paige locked me in here. I tried to get out, but nobody upstairs would help me.”

Grant felt anger rising, but Audrey suddenly gripped his arm.

“Grant, please. Find our baby first.”

He ran.

The Open Window

Caleb was in a smaller guest nursery at the opposite end of the hall.

Grant found the door partly closed.

When he entered, freezing air struck his face.

One of the large windows had been opened wide.

Snow had blown onto the floor.

Caleb was lying in his crib wrapped in nothing more than a lightweight blanket.

He barely moved.

Grant rushed forward and touched his son.

Something was wrong.

Caleb’s little body felt frighteningly cold, yet his forehead felt unusually warm.

Grant picked him up and wrapped him inside his coat.

Audrey appeared in the doorway, leaning against the wall for support.

“Oh, my baby.”

Grant pulled out his phone.

Before he could make the call, Lenora entered the hallway with Grant’s younger sister, Paige.

Lenora looked irritated rather than concerned.

“Will you please lower your voice?” she said. “People downstairs can hear you.”

Grant stared at her.

“The window was open.”

Paige folded her arms.

“Maybe Audrey opened it. She hasn’t exactly been behaving normally.”

Audrey shook her head.

“That’s not true.”

Lenora sighed dramatically.

“Grant, she has been overwhelmed for weeks. She cries constantly, forgets things and imagines people are against her. We have all been trying to help.”

Grant looked at his wife.

Then at his son.

Then back at his mother.

“Why was Audrey locked in a room?”

For the first time, Lenora hesitated.

Only for a second.

“She became unreasonable.”

That answer told Grant everything he needed to know for the moment.

He did not argue.

He carried Caleb downstairs, supported Audrey with his free arm and walked directly through the middle of Lenora’s elegant gathering.

Guests turned to stare.

Lenora hurried behind him.

“Grant, think about what you’re doing.”

Grant opened the front door.

“For once, Mother, that is exactly what I’m doing.”

What the Doctors Discovered

At the hospital, Caleb was immediately taken into a treatment room.

Audrey was examined as well.

Grant spent nearly an hour walking back and forth through a quiet corridor before a pediatric specialist approached him.

Dr. Warren Pierce spoke gently but seriously.

“Your son is stable now.”

Grant closed his eyes with relief.

“Thank God.”

The doctor continued.

“He appears to be fighting an infection, but prolonged exposure to cold made the situation considerably more dangerous.”

Grant looked up.

“How long would he have been near that window?”

“I can’t give you an exact number, but it was not a few minutes.”

Grant felt physically sick.

“Someone left him there?”

Dr. Pierce paused.

“Based on what you’ve described, I think you need to determine exactly what happened inside your home.”

Grant already knew how.

Two months earlier, after several break-ins had occurred in nearby neighborhoods, his security company had upgraded the entire property.

Almost every common room had discreet cameras.

Until that night, Grant had barely thought about them.

Now they might be the only witnesses he could trust.

The Recording That Changed Everything

After Audrey finally fell asleep beside Caleb’s hospital room, Grant opened his laptop.

He logged into the encrypted security system.
