Part 1 of 3

I Promised Ashley I’d Be Back in Thirty Minutes

The last thing my daughter heard before I closed the front door was my voice saying, “Half an hour, sweetheart. I’ll be back before your favorite cartoon ends.”

Ashley smiled from the couch, wrapped in her faded dinosaur blanket. Her cheeks were pink from the fever, and she hugged her stuffed dog, Buddy, against her chest.

“Can you get the rainbow cereal too?” she asked.

I held up the grocery list.

“Already wrote it down.”

She grinned.

That smile stayed with me long after I climbed into my old Ford pickup.

I never made it home.

The Grocery Bags Never Left My Truck

My name is Andrew Hayes, and for six years it had been just Ashley and me.

We lived outside a small town in western Oregon, in a modest house my late wife and I had bought before Ashley was born. After cancer took Emily, every routine became something Ashley and I learned together.

Saturday pancakes.

Library trips every Wednesday.

Movie night with frozen pizza.

And one important rule.

Never leave Ashley alone unless I absolutely had no choice.

That afternoon, I broke my own rule.

Her fever had climbed past 102 degrees. The children’s ibuprofen bottle was almost empty, and the refrigerator held little more than milk and leftover soup.

I figured I could drive into town, grab medicine, groceries, and electrolyte drinks, then hurry back.

It should have taken thirty minutes.

The rain had already started when I left.

The pharmacy wasn’t busy.

The pharmacist recognized me immediately.

“Ashley sick again?”

“Just a fever.”

“Keep her hydrated.”

“That’s the plan.”

She handed me the medicine.

At the grocery store, I picked up soup, bananas, bottled water, applesauce, crackers, frozen waffles, electrolyte drinks, and the colorful cereal Ashley loved even though I always complained it contained more sugar than breakfast.

I remember standing in the checkout line looking at the cereal box and laughing to myself.

Ashley would probably eat the marshmallows first.

The cashier loaded everything into paper bags.

“Drive carefully,” she said, glancing toward the rain pounding against the windows.

I nodded.

“Only ten minutes home.”

Those were the last ordinary words anyone heard me say.

The Road Disappeared Beneath the Storm

There were two ways back to our house.

The highway.

Or the county road that cut through the hills.

I chose the shortcut because I wanted Ashley to have her medicine sooner.

The rain became heavier almost immediately.

Wind pushed against the truck hard enough that I tightened both hands around the steering wheel.

Water rushed across sections of pavement that normally stayed dry.

I slowed to nearly twenty miles an hour.

Then I rounded one bend and saw mud sliding across the road from the hillside above.

I tapped the brakes.

Too late.

The truck lost traction.

Everything happened in seconds.

The front tires slipped sideways.

The steering wheel spun uselessly beneath my hands.

The truck crashed through a wooden guardrail.

For one impossible second, I could see nothing except gray rain and tree branches.

Then the ground disappeared.

I Woke Up Surrounded by Water

When I opened my eyes, everything hurt.

The windshield was cracked.

One airbag had deployed.

Rainwater poured through the broken glass.

My left leg wouldn’t move.

Pain shot through my hip every time I tried.

The truck had landed nose-first against a cluster of trees below the road.

Half of it rested inside rushing floodwater.

The grocery bags had burst open.

Bottles rolled across the floor.

The rainbow cereal floated in muddy water beside the passenger seat.

I reached for my phone.

The screen was black.

Broken.

I tried the truck radio.

Nothing.

The engine had already died.

Then I thought about Ashley.

She was waiting by the living-room window.

Watching every truck that drove past.

Believing I would keep my promise.

I shouted as loudly as I could.

Nobody answered.

Every Minute Felt Like I Was Leaving Her Alone

The water kept rising.

I knew staying inside the truck meant drowning.

Getting out meant climbing with one leg that barely worked.

Neither choice looked possible.

I forced open the driver’s door.

Cold water slammed into me.

Tree branches scraped my arms while I pulled myself onto the muddy embankment.

My left leg folded underneath me.

The pain made everything blur.

I crawled anyway.

I don’t remember how long it took.

Only that every few feet I stopped because I couldn’t breathe.

Eventually I reached a concrete drainage culvert beneath the road.

It was dry enough to keep me out of the current.

I dragged myself inside.

Rain hammered overhead.

I shouted until my voice disappeared.

No cars stopped.

No footsteps came.

Every hour I repeated the same words.

“Please… my daughter’s alone.”

Four Days Passed Inside My House Without Me

I would later learn what happened while I lay trapped beneath that road.

Ashley waited exactly where I told her to.

She watched through the front window until it became dark.

She never touched the grocery money I had left on the kitchen counter.

She believed I might still come through the driveway at any minute.

The next morning she ate the last granola bar in the pantry.
