Who is included in new ‘slimmed-down monarchy’ as five royals set to lose titles

Part 1 of 2

Since ascending the throne in 2022, King Charles III has made it clear that he favors a streamlined monarchy with a smaller circle of active working royals.

Royal commentators initially predicted that, like his late mother, the new king would reduce the number of individuals representing the Crown and focus on a select core group.

However, following his cancer diagnosis soon after his accession, King Charles found himself relying heavily on senior family members such as Prince William, Princess Kate, Princess Anne, and Prince Edward to fulfill public duties.

Prince William’s Stricter Approach to the Future

Observers now believe that Prince William will adopt an even more stringent approach when he becomes king. Richard Eden explained on the Palace Confidential podcast, “Prince William, like his father, has always favoured a slimmed-down monarchy as the future, and what that looks like now is just William and Catherine and their children.”

India Hicks, daughter of Lady Pamela Hicks, echoed this, noting that a concentrated core — consisting of the King, Queen, and the Prince and Princess of Wales — is seen as both modern and efficient.

Plans to Reduce Titles and Roles

According to royal expert Tom Sykes, William is not only expected to restrict roles but may also strip titles from non-working members of the royal family. At the forefront of this speculation is his uncle, Prince Andrew, who recently relinquished the use of his Duke of York title amid renewed scrutiny over his ties to Jeffrey Epstein. Although Andrew remains a prince and retains his dukedom, reports suggest William plans to remove those titles once he becomes king.
